Source: Canadian Curling Association – News

The Calgary Curling Club will be hosting the 2008 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, November 10-16, 2007. This Canadian Championship is a significant event in the curling season, and will ultimately lead to the crowning of a new National Mixed Champion. Two players from the winning team will also represent Canada at the first World Mixed Doubles Championship, March 9-15, 2008 in Vierumäki, Finland.

The team representing Alberta at this year’s event is Dean Ross, Susan O’Connor, Tim Krassman and Susan Wright, hometown favourite from the Calgary Curling Club. The nine other Provincial teams plus Yukon/Northwest Territories and Northern Ontario will play a round robin format, with the first place team advancing to the finals while the second and third placed teams compete in the semi-finals.

The Calgary Curling Club is offering Private Ice Boxes (sheet #1) for the entire competition (part of our Sponsorship Package). These Ice Boxes will have room for 8 seats and will have waiter/waitress service from the bar for your convenience. This is the first time at a Canadian Championship that this service has been initiated in a curling rink.

The Host Committee is operating a Silent Auction throughout the week. The funds raised will go towards Calgary Wheelchair Curlers that will assist with the purchase of equipment and ice time, and will give those individuals with disabilities, the opportunity to enjoy the sport of curling.

Please follow the details on this championship event by www.calgarycurlingclub.com/mixed or contact John Hamm or Ron Franklin, Co-chairs for this 2008 Canadian Mixed Championship. Results and information can also be found on www.curling.ca .. the Canadian Curling Association website.

The Canadian Curling Association announced Friday that the 2009 Canadian men’s curling championship will be held at Calgary’s Pengrowth Saddledome from March 7-15.

Calgary last hosted the Brier in 2002 — attracting 245,296 fans, the third-highest in tournament history — and has staged the event six times in total.

World’s best female curlers coming to New Glasgow

Eight of the World Curling Tour’s top 10 women’s teams will be in New Glasgow later this year for the Sobeys Slam.

Thirty-two rinks will participate in the Women’s WCT Grand Slam event, Jim Nix, chairman of the Sobeys Slam 2007, announced on Wednesday.

“It will be the best field to ever play in Eastern Canada,” Nix said in a news release.

“Included in this elite group is No. 1-ranked Jennifer Jones of Manitoba and Olympic medalist Shannon Kleibrink (Alberta). Other favourites include Sherry Middaugh (Ontario), Cathy King, Cheryl Bernard (both from Alberta) and Sherry Anderson (Saskatchewan).”

Colleen Jones, Mary-Anne Arsenault and Meredith Harrison, a third with Jill Mouzar’s provincial Scotties championship team, will headline Nova Scotia’s contingent at the Sobeys Slam, the first women’s Grand Slam event held east of Winnipeg.

Two American rinks will also make the trip to central Nova Scotia. Cassie Potter of Minnesota, the 2006 U.S. Olympic representative, and veteran Patti Lank of New York will partake in the event.

“It was a difficult decision to pare down the list to 32 rinks,” Nix said. “In the end, we went with a team’s current standing in the Order of Merit. In fact, only 31 spots are presently filled.”

The final regional spot will be decided in November when the leading money winner from bonspiels in Moncton and Charlottetown will receive the final berth in the spiel.

The Canadian rinks will be competing for Canadian team-ranking system (CTRS) points, which will enable them to qualify for the 2010 Olympic Trials. There is also $54,000 up for grabs, making the Sobeys Slam one of the richest women’s cash spiel.

The event is slated for Nov. 28 to Dec. 2 at the John Brother MacDonald Stadium and the Bluenose Curling Club.

Canadian icemaking gurus Hans Wuthrich and Dave Merklinger will be the technicians in charge of the curling sheets at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, the World Curling Federation announced Monday.

Wuthrich, of Gimli, Man., is generally acknowledged as the best icemaker in the world. The 50-year-old has been behind many big events during his career, but admits nothing compares to the Olympics.

“I’ve done so many events, I don’t know the actual number,” said Wuthrich, who will serve as the head technician. “I started keeping track of them in 1993, after I did my first big one, the men’s worlds in Geneva in 1992.

Wuthrich and Merklinger have worked together on more than 10 major curling events over the years, both overseas and across Canada.

Merklinger recently headed the ice crew at the 2007 Canadian men’s championship and the 2007 men’s world championship in Edmonton.
