The Calgary Curling Club will be hosting the 2008 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, November 10-16, 2007. This Canadian Championship is a significant event in the curling season, and will ultimately lead to the crowning of a new National Mixed Champion. Two players from the winning team will also represent Canada at the first World Mixed Doubles Championship, March 9-15, 2008 in Vierumäki, Finland.

The team representing Alberta at this year’s event is Dean Ross, Susan O’Connor, Tim Krassman and Susan Wright, hometown favourite from the Calgary Curling Club. The nine other Provincial teams plus Yukon/Northwest Territories and Northern Ontario will play a round robin format, with the first place team advancing to the finals while the second and third placed teams compete in the semi-finals.

The Calgary Curling Club is offering Private Ice Boxes (sheet #1) for the entire competition (part of our Sponsorship Package). These Ice Boxes will have room for 8 seats and will have waiter/waitress service from the bar for your convenience. This is the first time at a Canadian Championship that this service has been initiated in a curling rink.

The Host Committee is operating a Silent Auction throughout the week. The funds raised will go towards Calgary Wheelchair Curlers that will assist with the purchase of equipment and ice time, and will give those individuals with disabilities, the opportunity to enjoy the sport of curling.

Please follow the details on this championship event by http://www.calgarycurlingclub.com/mixed or contact John Hamm or Ron Franklin, Co-chairs for this 2008 Canadian Mixed Championship. Results and information can also be found on http://www.curling.ca .. the Canadian Curling Association website.

Brier headed to Calgary in 2009

Monday, October 15th, 2007

The Brier is returning to Calgary.

The Canadian Curling Association announced Friday that the 2009 Canadian men’s curling championship will be held at Calgary’s Pengrowth Saddledome from March 7-15.

Calgary last hosted the Brier in 2002 — attracting 245,296 fans, the third-highest in tournament history — and has staged the event six times in total.

The 2008 Brier will be held March 8-16 in Winnipeg.

Earlier this week, the CSA announced the 2009 Tournament of Hearts, the Canadian women’s curling championship, will be held in Victoria.
