Glenn Howard claimed the Masters of Curling title Sunday, edging Edmonton skip Randy Ferbey 5-4 in Waterloo, Ont.

With the score deadlocked at four in the eighth and final end, Howard, of Coldwater, Ont, chipped out Ferbey’s rock for the win.

“I just want to congratulate my guys,” Howard told CBC Sports. “I thought they curled awesome and it made my job easier.”

The $100,000 tournament was the first of four men’s Grand Slam events this year.

Howard scored two points in the first end, but Ferbey answered back with a pair in the second.

Following a blanked third end, the teams exchanged points in ends four through seven before Howard won the event in the eighth.

The victory earned Howard’s rink $30,000 and vaults the Ontario skip atop the money list for 2006 with $84,960.

“Anytime you beat the best team in the world you have to feel good about it,” said a gracious Howard. “Randy and his guys are the best in the world and they put on a great show.”
