Do You Own Shredder? Please Read This

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

With a growing number of Americans concerned about identity theft and privacy issues, many households now have paper shredders, some of which have enough power to shred CD’s. And now, a new warning has been issued, accompanied by startling and grisly tales of injury inflicted on companion animals by paper shredders. In almost all cases, dogs and cats stuck probing tongues into the openings and were caught; it is rare for these poor creatures to survive their injuries.

The good news is that you can prevent this from happening to your dog or cat. Most of us leave our shredders on the “automatic” setting – simply switch it to the “off” position. Or better yet, just unplug the device while it’s not in use. By taking this simple step today, you could avoid a great deal of grief in the future.  Healthy Pet Net

Dogproblems Dog Training Tips

I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE OF DOG TRAINING ...This technology is amazing.Go to this web site...http://www.idodogtricks.com/index_flash.html

ps this is such a demanded site, that they may be out of bandwidth every now and then. Just try back a little later.

But wait! Give the dog a command.Sit.Lay down.Whatever you want. Then, after you're done, as a final command... tell the dog to "kiss".In a few years (or maybe less) I can see this technology being used to help people learn how to train their dog, through virtual coaching and simulated examples.

Utterly amazing!Enjoy your dog.

Today is National Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day - Riiiight

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

Tip for the day: Watch what goes in your dog’s mouth. At least watch what you feed your dog. Not all dog food or dog treats are created equal.

And, beware of this!! If you ever change your brand of dog food…please, make sure you are aware of the calorie content of both your old and new food. I mean, make sure your new food calories match your old. Some foods vary as much as 100 calories/ per cup! That’s a lot of calories for a dog.

Please, do not overfeed or underfeed your dog when changing foods. Just consider this: if you feed your big dog 3 cups a doay, that is a difference of 300 calories!! If the calorie content is not listed on the bag, phone the company.

Premium Dog FoodDog Biscuit Appreciation Day? What does that mean? NO IDEA!

We read the ingredients and calories of our own snacks (or at least most of us should), so let’s do the same with our dogs.

Dogs who are not active, eating too much and just snoozing most of the day are becoming like us! FAT! Let’s become more conscience of the foods we feed our dogs.

Although you may think all pet food manufacturers have your pet’s best interests in mind, this is not always the case. Current pet food regulations allow manufacturers to use ingredients that you would never knowingly give to your pet.

In fact, you may be shocked to learn what some brands of pet food really contain. For example: the use of by-products (feet, bones and intestines, etc.), chemical preservatives (BHA and BHT) and grains that are often difficult to digest (corn, wheat, gluten and soy), which are often used as a protein source instead of meat. Thanks Maria Kang at fitness and cure for reminding us all about our dog’s health care. My own Golden is getting that winter handle around her middle…time for health and exercise…for both of us.

GETTING YOUR KIDS TO TRAIN YOUR DOG...

Think about it, summer is just around the corner and you want to be able to take your dog with you... wherever you and your kids go.

Hello Adam

I wrote you just last week and I am currently in the process of trying quite of few of your training methods. My boyfriend and I are trying to read everything, but so far we haven't finished reading the book yet.

My question to you this time regards our kids. We have 2 kids aged 9 and 11. These 2 boys are at the stage in life where you tell them something and it goes in one ear and out the other. So when it comes to training our puppy, our rules are not being followed. Do you recommend that children in this age range participate in helping train?

If not, how do we teach our puppy that she is lower than them in the pack?

Any insight would be wonderful since our puppy tends to chew on their pants and feet.

Thank you

Reply: I have raised 3 so far and am grandmother to 2 more. Dogs have been in our lives right along. So on that note, your sons are old enough to understand basic commands, (we all hope, when our children are that age!) Can they play with the dog, and maybe ask for a sit or down, then give a treat when the dog listens? Make it fun for your boys, and it will really be fun for the dog.

Our 2 year old granddaughter can make our 19 month old GSD down on command. She is really loud, but she is 2. She yells, Wreck, lay down! And he drops like someone shot him. I give her a cookie, and she passes it on, with a smug expression, and he takes it ever so gently. Not always the case with other treats, so, we make sure that she only has the bland cookie so he doesn't grab.

Your boys are old enough to be involved, and you must make it seem like homework, that if they do a good job and make the dog listen, they got an A plus, so now they have a treat of their own. My boy, needed to have rewards to do what I wanted, he is now 22 yrs. and I still think that it works best for him. Hmmmmmm. Kinda like dog training.! LOL

Painted Cats

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

The “painted cats” email is making the rounds into everyone’s inbox. This is about the book “Why Paint Cats”.  But, according to urban legends, the cats from this book were NOT painted in real life, and the people in the book are not real either.

It is a book of humour and fiction.  Personally, I hate the pictures and I am glad that they are not for real. There is nothing that beats the beauty of a cat’s natural colours.  The cats are all painted on the computer screen, not in real life.

Top 6 Reasons why a Dog is your BEST Training Partner

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Sharing is the essence of life, and this guest writer shares his article by common lincese. From a fellow dog owner and dog lover.  The dogs are my Nikki, Benny and Dukie.

I just came back from a night run with my dog, Tiger. IT was super fun because he is a fast, young sprinter who loves, loves, loves walks!!! I performed a series of sprints, jogs and walks for about 30 minutes. Here is my top 6 reasons why dogs like Tiger is the best training partner in the world!

1. Dogs will NEVER say No to a walk/jog.
Dogs don’t cancel on appointments, they don’t get their period or have bad days. Dogs always have a huge smile on their faces and are ready for a long, calorie burning jog/walk with you anytime!
2. Dogs don’t SLOW you down.
Dogs don’t complain about moving too fast or spend hours getting ready for a good sweat session. The only time when they MIGHT give you problems is when they are going number 2 and you have to wait for them to finish for a maximum of maybe 2 mintues!
3. Dogs don’t COMPLAIN.

Dogs don’t get mad if you are late, early, tired, sick or angry. They don’t hold it against you if you didn’t sleep enough the night before, are not running as fast as you did last week and haven’t progressed physically towards your fit goals. Dogs love you just as you are!

4. Dogs don’t REMEMBER if you cancelled a walk appointment with them.
So you’re tired and lazy…maybe you came home really late - but dogs don’t know that! They didn’t know your intention was to take them to the park! They won’t make you feel bad for not making your ‘promise’ and will lick and kiss you anyways!!

5. Dogs can COMPETE with you to sprint fast!
Sprinting fast to the finish line (your home or the park) is a fun game especially if you have a dog who is really fast! This really helps speed up your metabolism, work on those Type 2 muscle fibers and wake your body up! This is a great HITT run program.

6. Dogs ATTRACT people with other dogs who also use them as running partners!
While it’s annoying when your dog goes crazy when he/she see’s another dog, at least you get a cool hello and smile from the person who is also struggling with their training partner. Eventually, “likes will attract likes” and you get to know those who are just like you: A person who loves dogs and can only persuade them to workout with them too!

My walking buddies … also arm strengtheners :)
